The Problem
Sensory and behavioral emergencies are frightening and dangerous for individuals with autism and their caregivers, and generic emergency tools are not designed for their needs.
The Challenge
Designing an interface calm and simple enough to use during a crisis, that supports both the individual and the caregiver, with fast access to help.
Architecture
- Guided calming protocols tailored to sensory needs.
- One-tap emergency contacts with GPS location sharing.
- Speech recognition for hands-free interaction.
- Caregiver guidance flows for de-escalation.
Workflow
- 1Trigger the assistant during an emerging crisis.
- 2Follow calming protocols or reach a contact instantly.
- 3Share location and caregiver guidance automatically.
Engineering Decisions
- →Accessibility-first, low-stimulation UI.
- →Speech input so the tool works when touch is overwhelming.
- →Co-designed with caregiver needs in mind.
Results
Prototype validating a calmer, faster emergency response experience.
Lessons Learned
Accessibility is the product, not a feature — every decision had to reduce cognitive load under stress.
Future Improvements
- Personalized protocol profiles.
- Wearable integration.
